It's pretty rare, and I'm not very good at it.
Success has been to always begin with agreement. Something you can agree with in what they think. People sort everyone into simple boxes - are you my tribe or a moron? You have to be a human (on their side) or they won't listen. When you have rapport, you can sometimes pose a question or two and they may consider it. Any arrogance on my part, which I can sometimes do, is the death of the conversation.
Some people psychologically require certainty. They don't tend to ever question what they already believe. They tend to operate from the amygdale, and when threatened will dig in to defend what they think. Studies have shown that if you show anyone images of violence they tend to become more conservative in any question that follows.
