Tap water is heavily processed water, in accordance with national legislation. In developed countries it is generally of a very high quality, usually much better than bottled water (!). There are very long lists of upper limits for toxic compounds in tap water (but not in bottled water!), which follows from local directives and ordonances.
I don't know about the situation in Australia specifically though, but I doubt there is chlorine in your tap water to supress germs.
