Dear British People,

enough is enough.
Really. Stop making an ass of yourselves. You are nice and kind and lovely people, do you really want to become the laughing stock of the civilized world?
"The people have spoken", haha. Just accept the fact that Brexit was/is/will always be a textbook example of a crackpot idea that leads nowhere but down.
Now get rid of the Demonic Possession and come back home please. We Europeans aren't perfect either, and we will happily accept your sincere apologies. Just send us a bottle of Isle of Skye whisky and an annual subscription to the Royal Shakespeare Company, and we will be fine. See you in Paris/Berlin/Rome next summer, let's get drunk [and I mean drunk!], and let's have a good laugh together, about this present madness. 馃尫

Yours cordially,
helenS.

[Note added: this post is no longer relevant. The majority of British people have now decided, at their peril, to harm their own interests, and "get Brexit done". So be it. Go find more trustworthy friends. Mr. Trump is waiting for you. 馃槙]

Die Zeit ist da.

I wonder how you and others, on both sides of the argument, will be marking the momentous day. My partner is deserting me for a Black Mass with her Remainer friends, so I will be enjoying my celebration dinner on my own. The food and drink will include items from Ireland, France, Germany, Italy and Hungary, as well as the UK.

On the CD player will be Birgit Nilsson (Sweden) in Gotterdammerung, which seems to me to describe appropriately the death of the old order and the birth of the new, in Britain if not in the rest of Europe. I have been amusing myself by wondering what roles contemporary protagonists might play. Nigel Farage is Hagen, obviously. Philip Hammond and Teresa May seem ideal casting for Gunther and Gutrune. Anna Soubry can be one of the keening Rhinemaidens. And although it's the wrong opera, Lady Justice Hale was surely born to sing Fricka in Die Walkure. Any other suggestions?

In any case, I look forward to close, friendly and healthy relations with all European countries for our lifetimes at least.

@MartinII "Mittag! - Die Zeit ist da! (Gurnemanz)" 馃榿
I wish you all the best. I will try to express my feelings and thoughts later.
MartinII70-79, M
@helenS Yes. I was actually thinking of the words when used by Klingsor at the beginning of Act 2.

@MartinII In a sense, quoting Klingsor instead of Gurnemanz is so fitting... 馃榿
MartinII70-79, M
@helenS Yes, but Klingsor lost.
helenS36-40, F
@MartinII Exactly! 馃榿 (Klingsor = Murdoch, Farage, and the like.)

@helenS I don鈥檛 know about Murdoch, but Farage surely fits Hagen much better than Klingsor. They both achieve their general objective - defeat of the gods and revenge for their theft of the gold from his father in Hagen鈥檚 case, Brexit and defeat of the liberal establishment in Farage鈥檚 - but fail to derive any personal benefit. I don鈥檛 suppose the Thames will burst its banks and engulf Parliament Square tonight, but I doubt we shall hear much from Farage in the future.

You are so nieve, the U.K. Opposed 75 laws and lost....first you won't get a referendum, then there is a big chance the scots will vote to remain in uk and if you do get to leave then the eu might not accept the scots joining...@fairefoutre

@fairefoutre you will have to wait and see if my government allow you to have a referendum, which I suspect won't happen til late 2021 and if the uk is doing ok by then, the scots may then vote to remain.....time will tell..
