Have You Ever Walked Into A Grocery Store And Bought Something You Thought Was The Meat Of An Animal... And It Wasn't?

The very powerful meat industry, has done and are attempting to pass laws forbidding the use of labels/words like "veggie burger" or "vegan hot dog" on plant-based products. They SAY that it is confusing or "deceptive" to consumers, even though every plant-based "meat" product has meatless plain as day somewhere on the front of the packaging.

The use of burger with Veggie is incorrect. The definition of burger always has a reference describing meat between two slices of some type of bread substance, with other ingredients. So, the name veggie burger is misleading.

I'm happy for people to have their own dietary preferences, but the naming of products should not confuse others.

As a point of reference, I did look up the definition of burger because I have been annoyed at the idea of a veggie burger for some time.

@Zeusdelight Most definitions of "burger", do include something like this: "A dish consisting of a round patty of ground beef, or sometimes another savory ingredient, that is fried or grilled and typically served in a split bun or roll with various condiments and toppings.

I fail to how see how anyone can find it "misleading" or confusing, when there is a clear descriptor before the word burger. Does it also annoy you, that a hamburger does not typically contain "ham"?

@Piper Even worse, they don't even originate from Hamburg! 😂

@DrWatson I KNOW! When I visited Hamburg as a kid, there weren't even any hamburger places in sight! 😁

@Piper I bet Frankfurt disappointed you as well.

@DrWatson Ha! No, but I was there many times. There were many words for the sausages I quite enjoyed while living in Germany. I do think even then though, I'd have tried one that had "veggie" before that word.

@Piper Hi Piper, I assume, the word hamburger was shortened to burger because of the various meats used. People understood that a Hamburger did not usually contain "Ham" and so used a less misleading term. It is very unusual in Australian advertising to hear of a Hamburger being advertised, rather it is a burger being advertised. (I did laugh at the hamburger and Frankfurt comments, I remember thinking the same as a kid:))

@Zeusdelight I wouldn't assume that, myself. Glad you enjoyed those comments, though!

@Zeusdelight @Piper Where I come from they are called beef burgers, pork burgers, chicken burgers pea burgers, veggie burgers, etc. Just the word burger doesn't tell me what kind of meat or other protein it will be made of unless I'm at burger bar such as McDonalds or Max.
