Horse thieves were immediately hanged. There was usually no need to wait for the circuit judge. The reason for that was that most men only had one horse, and if it was stolen they could not outrun enemies, or could die with no way to go the long miles to get to water.

To cheat at cards was almost as bad, but the horse thief was worse.

@4meAndyou yeah taking someone’s horse could leave them stranded out in the middle of nowhere or they may not have a livelihood if they didn’t have their horse.

@cherokeepatti All except for the fact that in order to actually be out in the middle of nowhere you didn't walk to get there.

Horse thieves and cattle rustlers were both big problems for the big ranchers. They got cut from herds on the way to market and were unbranded.

That's why the law was so strong against horse thieves. Owned personal horses are smart. they always went back home soon as someone took off the mountings.
