I think there's 2 ways.
1: You think of a goal, and the desire to obtain it gives you a bit of motivation. Of course, you need to break the long-term goal down into smaller sizes, that way you're not crushed by how far away it seems.
2: Motivation isn't created, then you suddenly can go do things. You have to force yourself to do what you don't want to do and over time you develop motivation based on the success you see.
That's how I see it.
You also sound like my little brother. He's an agreeable person, so he'll obey rules and just go with the flow if someone wants him to do something.
Basically, you have to force yourself. Motivation will come over time, as long as you don't allow yourself to give up.
