There was a doctor who would give a capsule to patients that wanted to lose weight. He’d tell them when they reached their goal to come back and he would give them another capsule. The first capsule was a tapeworm head, the second was medicine to kill the tapeworm. I believe the people didn’t know what they were being given.

In the 1500's in France and England, women painted their faces with white paint so they would appear very fair. Unfortunately the chemists of the time did not know that using white paint with lead would actually kill the women who bought their products.

Supposedly some women would have a rib removed to fit in certain corsets, but that’s mostly rumor—the fact that they laced themselves into them was bad enough. Woman still use chemical hair straighteners and skin bleaching creams (and conversely, curly perm waves, tanning booths). Then there are the various things people (again, mostly women) have endured in other cultures in the name of societal “beauty” standards, foot-binding, metal rings to elongate the neck, ear gauges and face tattoos.
