Any tips???

My dog learned to shake in a day, sit in a few days, and potty trained very quickly. He also learned to go to his bed quickly. In under a week. We have been working on lay down for weeks and he DOES NOT get it....I must be doing something wrong. How did you train your dog to lay down and stay?

Btw this is my first time training a puppy

Your throwing a lot at him
Give it time
Treats...dont force him or push him down literally
They are very smart
Use your hand and your voice
Sit and stay are the most important
Then “down”.....it’s a logical sequence they’ll figure out
Be patient
Obviously I love dogs 😊
@luctoretemergo true, he isnt quite 4 months yet but almost. Gotta be patient.

get a treat in your hand...lead his nose to the floor until he lays down and say "lay down" each time. When he finally does it, reward the behavior and continue.
@JarJarBoom good. Thank you! I use treats and make a down motion with my hand flat. Not doing it. Lead with the food lol!

Real steak strips .....let him smell them cooking.....and you can make him do nearly anything
@Notanymore he does love meat

@lulaluboo I once trained an 8 month old puppy to lay down, roll over and do circles on command with one pack of steak strips......my dogs now.....not so much, but they're kinda hyperdumb

Have you tried having him sit first, and once he’s in the sit position, then put your hand with the treat against the floor in front of him while giving the command? If he tries to stand up to get the treat, then try again and after he’s sat, place your (non treat) hand on his lower back firmly (not pressing) while you try again with placing your treat hand on the floor and saying the command.

I'm having the same trouble with my puppy. I tell her to sit first, then I lead her down with the treat (hold it on your hand and only open your hand once he's down), but she won't do it without the gesture, so we're working on that.

Using something he really loves to eat will help. Once he gets the laying down part, he may not do it without you leading him down with the treat. So what I'm doing is saying "down" and then I wait 1 second, then lead down with the treat. And the next time I wait two seconds and lead down with the treat, and so on. Eventually he will start laying down without you leading him down, cause he'll get what's next after you say "down". I hope that makes sense! It works, but you have to be patient. Sometimes I have to wait 20 seconds before my dog will lay down, but I always make sure to just say "down" once, or the word loses meaning.

Good luck!!

ya gotta offer him a treat while holding it above his nose and slowly rais it down to the floor. his but should eventually follow his head down, but you may have ti push it down some...
