@MayaHope I think the reason I do that comes from living alone for many yrs.
It's just easier I think. If I mess it's on the kitchen counter so it's easy to clean and I don't have to take the plate etc. back to the kitchen. It's also quicker so I can get on with something else I enjoy doing more. Like reading.
I didn't even realise this was odd until my brother saw me doing it one day and mentioned that he thought it was weird.

Well I enjoy eating... so I like to make a moment of it @Wraithorn
