I was working in Japan at the time. My roommate's fiance' called from the US late at night (our time) to tell us about it. The next day at work, my Japanese boss called me and my US colleague into his office to share his condolences. And then he used the disaster as an example of poor US engineering and explained to us how we could learn much during our stay in Japan. I was not a happy camper.
