listen some more. most probable explanation is that the neighbor's cat just walked into my room through the window. he does that sometimes.

I stop breathing for a moment and listen for any other noises.

Get out of bed, stub my toe on the bedside table, limp as though I have a mortal injury, find my way in the dark running my hand along the wall, trip over the dog, step on the dogs ball, fall backward, land on my ass, crawl to the couch and say fuck it.

Get up and investigate....

I don't worry about it but end up getting up to prove its nothing anyway.

I look over the side of the bed. If the dog is still sleeping I know I was just hearing things and go back to sleep.

Grab the nightmode camera and sage amd insence and sword and investigate

Swear loudly at it, then go back to sleep. It's usually the cat's fault.

I try to listen to thr sound and then go back yo smell msheep msleep again

pull the covers up over my head and hope it doesn't happen again

As long as neither of us fell out of bed, it can wait until morning

Go back to sleep.

Check the usual suspects: teddy bear, fan, and air conditioner. Usually it's the Bear ferreting around the kitchen.

Get up to see what it was, nervously. 😰
