Why have so many hotels and restaurants that existed before 1976 disappeared now?

Why didn't the proprietors sell them on the condition that they continue to be run under the old names and remain exactly the same as before with absolutely nothing changed even slightly?

Well the 70's was full of industrial strife and the 80's was full of economical strife !

So i guess it follows that if Proprietor #1 couldn't make his business survivable, proprietor #2 would probably have pulled it down or turned it into something else reflecting the market of the time.

@calicuz My whole point is that those changes needn't have come in the 80s. I wanted the 80s to be a continuation of the 70s. Change is evil. Modernisation is cancer. Full stop.
