[@Mainly because in the U.S. we didn’t know. People who emigrate to the U.K. know they’re from Trinidad, Ghana, Nigeria, etc. “African American” was [b]originally[/b] the designation specifically for people descended from African slaves. Newer immigrants call [b]themselves[/b] Kenyan-American, etc.
