Usually if it's something I'm dreading then there is no choice but to face it and go through it. I just try to think about any positive aspects of it, and also try not to think about it until it gets here (that also helps gather courage and strength). Then when the moment arrives I just walk headlong into it expecting the worst, hoping for the best, and dealing with it one moment/one step at a time. Usually I'm pleasantly surprised that it turns out to be okay or at least not as bad as I had imagined.
