My mother used to say "he's been around before" about my brother when he was a toddler as if his maturity and understanding of the world came from a past life because he seemed so precocious.

Sounds like a reincarnate. When I was a kid there was a lot of talk about Colorado woman who was an reincarnate of a woman who lived in Ireland named Bridey Murphy in the 1800s. Her previous life was discovered by accident by an amateur hypnotist.
