If a bully assaults you, do you have the right to also assault the bully? Legally, no. Man, woman, it makes no difference.
You do not have the legal right to hit anyone, even if they hit you first, just as homeowners do not have the right to kill burglars when they break into your home. One crime does not justify another.
If, however, someone is trying to shoot you and you throw a knife to make them stop and the knife kills the shooter, you are exempt, because that is legal self-defense.

That's not entirely true. In most places you have the right to self-defense. You're allowed to fight back with proportional force for the purpose of making the attack stop. If someone hits you and is clearly going to hit you a second time, you are definitely allowed to hit them back before that second strike. If your strike makes them stop (hit them in a sensitive area) then you have to stop and make your escape.
Your statement about the knife sounds accurate to me as long as you have reasonable belief that the gun in their hand is loaded, pointed at you and they intend to use it.

@wildbill83 We have Castle Doctrine in Massachusetts as well. The courts do look at you funny if you shoot too fast, but if someone breaks in and shows any intent to harm you, it's fine to use lethal force.
