Unfortunately this is one where it seems the attitude of "I'm wealthy so I deserve special treatment" went too far. If your kids can't compete on a level playing field to get into a college they are going to struggle in that college/university. These parents are really trying to set their kids up for failure later by not making them work for what they really want.
As an ex D1 college athlete I would have been VERY upset with someone getting one of the slots meant for a deserving teammate for someone that wasn't even ever going to compete or contribute.
As a student I would have been even MORE upset as I wasn't able to get grant $$$ or loans without fighting tooth and nail for them. I worked VERY HARD for the education I got and I value it even more today as I watch those around me w/out college educations struggle to climb into leadership ranks even though they may make great leaders or contributors but can't because they don't have any higher education.
