Because we grow up surrounded by artificial standards, almost none of them or achievable by the average person, and many of those people feel the need to bring others down in order to feel better about their own failings. Instead of, you know, actually growing up and learning from them.

@ScrewThisImDone my days ppl use to treat me so badly because of their own insecurities. It's so pathetic, I'd be ashamed of myself if I treated ppl like that.
Society taught us shame to control us. Its not just your generation, it was worse in the past and is worse in some places like Japan, they feel so much shame they end their own lives.
Its so much worse when its your own family that taught you shame

@MushroomFaerie my dad did when he rejected me, I've spent a lifetime feeling I'm not good enough, I hate relationships and am repulsed by humans in general. They're disgraceful how they treat one another.

It happens or happened much more in older generations.

@Gingerbreadspice I think the older generation definitely put the shame they received onto their children, it's disgusting that one that feels pain would choose to inflict that pain onto their own. I do resent my parents' generation. Then you have this whole snowflake bollox, mocking us because we are deeply emotional because they made us feel shame for having emotions. It's completely natural and they make us feel wrong for having them. This is why I despise conservatism.
