@MarkA The problem is that most of the ridiculous stories we hear about UK schools are actually true. Headteachers seem to be in competition to see who can come up with the most pointless, petty, ridiculous rule.

Some Heads will try to stop pupils wearing shorts or skirts when the weather gets too hot.
Oh’ wait, they already have...@suzie1960
MarkA · 56-60, M
Now THAT seems to be absolutely true!

@Harriet03 One school (at least) even said sick students would be given buckets to vomit in rather than being allowed to leave the classroom -
https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/great-yarmouth-charter-academy-rules-bucket-vomit-north-korea-mark-steel-einstein-a7960051.html

"The reason for the new rules, according to the school, is that “students need the right environment in which to learn and succeed”. And what creates a better environment in which to learn and succeed than the person next to you chucking up in a bucket?"
MarkA · 56-60, M
I remember that conkers story well. And the one about throwing snowballs and the young chap who wanted to be allowed to wear a skirt to school in hot weather etc etc etc

@suzie1960 Then the next day, most of the class is absent. Cross contamination! 🤷‍♀️

I was invigilating an exam once in a school classroom. A student began to throw up and one of my fellow invigilators rushed forward and caught the students vomit in her cupped hands as she thought it would spoil her exam paper!
What a heroine!! Waaaaaay above and beyond the call of duty!!!

@Harriet03 He did back down following a major outcry but it show the sort of dictatorial mentality we're dealing with. I'm sure most of the problems in UK education are caused by nasty little scumbags like him. In the rest of Europe, schools treat their students with respect - which is reciprocated.
MarkA · 56-60, M
I have worked in a school, running exams, and have seen such rubbish first hand. It's quite an eye opener.
I have also seen some pretty poor and violent behaviour from students, and I live in a pleasant, fairly affluent part of the UK. It happens all over.

@MarkA

How much of that is due to the way they're treated/abused by teachers?

Schools frequently break the law, especially in respect of equality legislation. I had to issue proceedings against my children's school when my son was a victim of its sexist rules. ( See - https://similarworlds.com/6283232-I-Am-Tired-of-Double-Standards/202807-When-my-children-were-at-school-boys-were-treated ) With such terrible role models, how can we expect children to have any respect for rules or other people?
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@MarkA I posted some most links to examples of ridiculous school rules here - https://similarworlds.com/5-Education/2350101-What-is-the-difference-between-UK-school-and-a?rid=26672752 See the reply from @Caroline259 too.

Wow! Great that you went that far with your son's school! But what stupidity from the Headteacher.
I agree. Treat people with respect and they should repay it.
Trouble is, these days teachers are expected to be social workers, disciplinarians, referees, role models and surrogate parents because many parents won't or can't bring up their own children. It's amazing they have any time left for teaching.
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@MarkA
It's amazing they have any time left for teaching.
They'd have a lot more time if they didn't waste so much of it making up and enforcing petty rules such as, literally, checking students are wearing the "right" colour socks!
MarkA · 56-60, M
That's the schools policy, not the teaching staff. Teachers don't like it any more than we do
