The thing is, followers know their preachers are wrong. But they stay because in their minds when you join a church/cult, you don't do it for one person you are there because you love God. The preacher uses the fear and love of God to keep the herd together. A brainwashed cult attendee could find his preacher having sex with his partner and still find a way to forgive him.
