What do you think is behind the fact that cultures all over this planet have similar mythological creatures like vampires and elves and such?

The sprites, Puca, (That's where puck came from) elves, faeries, gnomes, trolls, ogres, Yetis, Sasquatches, werewolves, vampires, skin walkers, dragons, etc etc.....

The reason so many different countries and cultures have similar mythologies is due to the progression of human migration around the planet over thousands of years.

@puck61 Because with that migration the stories were carried with them, and over time as well as repeated retellings, the stories changed as they were added to and taken away from but the same basic ideas remained and carried on in people's minds and imaginations.
