Well, in a way, yeah. Because you're not truly free to do absolutely anything unless you have nothing to lose. And to be honest I don't know if that's good or bad.

Nah. Some people are far freer than others without having to make any sacrifices.

@BrokenWhiskeyGlass2 I wouldn't call the homeless free.

@SW-User It depends on your perception, I guess. Also, they didn't reject their material possessions willingly.
@SW-User Thank you. You conveyed what I meant more succinctly.
No. Try losing your freedom, health or sanity and tell me how this works for ya.

@HungJury I think they're referring to losing everything as in material things and perhaps friendships and other relationships, not really losing like the basic things you need to function.
@BrokenWhiskeyGlass2 Unless you are a self-sufficient hunter/gatherer, material things and relationships are part of the basic things you need to function in this society. It would be more correct say ... temper your attachment to material things and desired outcomes. But that doesnt have the same snappy ring or air of bravado.

@LvChris I would think it's more about people. Like, you're not really free to do absolutely anything in your life if you have people you care about, and who care about you. Cos you might hurt them. Or maybe they won't let you.
