What is the appeal of a show like the Walking Dead?

I mean seriously. Why would any normal human being want to watch a zombie eating someone's brain?
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
The zombies are a constant threat but not really what the show is about.

It's about fantasizing that the world is a much simpler place, and we no longer have to deal with all the byzantine rules of society, and all the pretension and artifice that goes along with that.

It's about survival, outwitting your enemies, and forming close, personal bonds with others through experiencing the horrors of the end of modern society and the world in which we live.

@SumKindaMunster “It's about fantasizing that the world is a much simpler place
— This is probably the most prevalent appeal of the show. Like old wild west shows.

@helenS Perhaps.

What is the appeal of even watching TV? It is a total waste of time. I don't own one.
helenS · 36-40, F
@hunkalove Certainly the best approach.
Although I sometimes watch silly TV shows when I have worked too much and can’t sleep.
lorne13 · 61-69, M
it's a metaphor, a representation of what happens when humans gather in large crowds, they becaome zombies and their brains don't function
helenS · 36-40, F
@lorne13 That’s a nice way of seeing it.
Im not normal. I just love zombies and most end-of-the-world secnarios.
I also love zombie games.

@TURTLEGOD Riding the subway train, and thinking “They are all zombies!” — you know that feeling?
😁
helenS · 36-40, F
It’s a bit morbid
But it’s fun!
The earlier seasons were good but its really lost its substance since then.

@Existentially Oh wow! I must ask my sister — she loves the show. I’ve seen parts of season 1 only.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@helenS They got too obsessed with Negan.
helenS · 36-40, F
@basilfawlty89 Sorry I don’t remember the names.

I think the zombies in popular culture are a metaphor for mindless, soulless human behaviors, especially doing drugs (meth, heroin) and watching TV.
Newconvo2 · 46-50, M
The show has zombies but it is really about human interaction when the world goes to $h1t
firefall · 61-69, M
the thrill is in the evading, not the failing

You answered your own question...

🤷..my son watches
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
It's more about how humans triumph in the face of adversity.
helenS · 36-40, F
@basilfawlty89 Yes, an entertaining TV show about serious questions.
