real possibility now, there's only .. what, 7 months? and it's a really complex set of things to be negotiated
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@firefall who’s fault is it? The UK’s or the EU’s? Or have they been both equally retarded?
firefall · 61-69, M
@Longpatrol The UK's - May's government keeps not sending ppl to negotiate, and on the occasions they do make the negotiating conference, they don't negotiate but present hard, redline demands (essentially what the referendum campaign promised), which only works if you're negotiating from strength.

The EU is quite keen not to have a no-deal Brexit, because while it might do terrible things to the UK economy, it'll hurt parts of the EU quite a lot (Ireland, Denmark, Belgium & Holland I think would all suffer considerable economic pain.

@firefall @Longpatrol Yeah, EU has more negotiation weight. The UK needs that trade more than the EU does. It kind of feels like the masses have been fooled into thinking if you just insist hard enough you can have your way. You can't. Not only that, but the EU itself has incentive to make it hurt for the UK, to dissuade any other talk of leaving. If the UK leaves and their economy gets smashed, it'll be the sole example of what happens when you leave the EU, and it won't be a pretty example.

[it’s such a waste things ended up like this. But then I have to remind myself. Humans may be capable of rational thought, but we are ruled by our passions.@ @Xuan12

@Xuan12 Thats a good point, from the EU hierarchy's POV, having a frightening example would definitely discourage others from leaving (hello, Greece).
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@firefall Greece is in a worse position. They don’t even have the option of Grexit. The country will collapse.
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
@Longpatrol I share that sentiment. Especially because Britain didn't even have the worst of the EU. They kept their own currency. That more than anything is a reason to be wary of joining the EU, but it wasn't even an issue. Britain kept the pound sterling, so they had control of their own currency, which is the biggest downside of the EU from my point of view.

@Longpatrol I agree, it's a collossal waste, and I shudder to think of all the pain that it'll cause. And yes, individuals can be rational, but crowds are crazy :(

To me it's primarily an example of how the journalistic organisations have abandoned their old role of testing & identifying falsehoods, because the Leave! campaign seemed to get away with the most outrageous (and, to me, obvious) lies, and didn't get called on them at all.

(ETA) and @Xuan12 is absolutely on the money (haha) about avoiding the euro
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
And now they have to live with the "Brexit" moniker, which sounds like a dreadful British invention trying to combine dental hygiene products with breakfast cereal. 😭
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@firefall whilst we can blame The Sun and other tabloids of gross exaggeration and dare I say it? “Fake news” the more trusted publications should have done more to safeguard the sanctity of journalistic integrity.
firefall · 61-69, M
@Longpatrol Yes I absolutely agree. Tabloids are always going to be grotesque, but the absence of policing this by the serious media was .. startling. Horrifying. and repeated in the US a few months later :(

@Xuan12 LOL! Try new BREXIT, now with added tooth-smashing power!
