After reading some of the comments, it's obvious people here have very little survival experience.

A length of rope

It depends on where the island is--a tropical island would have different items than a more temperate island. Assuming we're talking about a tropical island, I'd take a multifunction tool that includes a knife blade, a metallic fire starter, and as much cord as I could manage. 500 feet would do fine.
