Why are people so quick to being butt hurt over nothing?

So every time I have a discussion with someone about something they 'think' I disagree with them on they become defensive. The replies are focused on making me see wrong or mean?. . .

Generally I just wonder why people can't have a civil discussion.

Is it because they don't want to learn or grow as people?
