I think they do that in the South. I did it when I was a kid in the 1950s.

I used to put salted sunflower seeds (out of the shell of course) into my coke or pepsi all the time. Only in a glass though. Doesn't really work in a can or bottle.
Oddly never heard of doing it with peanuts though.

Sounds like a goofy midwest thing. Some towns only have peanuts & coke machines.
