Can you go on having a meaningful chat with someone with no expectation of seeing his/her actual face?

Of course. I almost always do. Conversation is conversation. It doesn't need to include photos at all. I've never posted a photo of myself online and have connections I have sustained for years, that are clearly meaningful.
