Why is it when lightning strikes a cornfield it isn't full of popcorn?

It is. That's how we get bags of it pre-popped. The popcorn pickers go into the field during the storm and fill bags with it, before the rain hits hard. It's a risky operation and that's why the pre-popped stuff is more expensive.
