Ever have to attend a retirement dinner for someone you really don't like?

My boss is retiring. He was a jackass to work for, but everyone in the office is going and the new boss, who I like a lot, will be there (he was promoted from another position in our department).
Had one retired last year, I was the only person that turned up. Couple days later, I was called in to HR, within 2 weeks I was promoted to a supervisory position. He apparently wrote an amazing letter of recommendation to our GM.
I don't generally do things that I dislike. That includes social "obligations" or gatherings with or for people I don't like.

A few drinks/good smoke can ease these occassions along ...

Nope. I usually work afternoon shift most days anyway.
Think of it as a good riddance party not a farewell party! 😁

Sounds like a few Navy retirements
