Was math discovered or invented ?

In fact more to the point it was built on other modes of thought. If our language and numbers were much different. Math would look much different as well.

@JustGoneNow Dear Nothingness, the question is whether mathematical objects, such as an ellipsis, exist, independent of whether we exist, or not. I think the answer “yes” (which I strongly believe in) is outdated now, and Mathematicians tend towards a certain constructivism (“it’s all our invention”). I feel these guys should be a bit more humble, and less self-important.

@helenS Strongly debated point and I do see your point as far as the principles are concerned but I believe the system for calculating said values IS invented for exactly the reasons I and others here have stated already in this thread.

Nothing is completely correct.

Math was devised to explain things ... it has a ton of shortcomings ... to which we have cobbled together a plausible system.

But, it did not exist to be discovered ... it is just a set of axioms and theorems that seem to work.
