why does appearance matter so much?

It shows self respect. You don't need to be beautiful, or sexy, but clean and well groomed, shows you care enough to take care of yourself.
indyjoe · 56-60, M
Being clean, groomed, and neat is important...but physical features not so much and unfortunately a lot of judgement gets passed on that too. Why? Because our society and culture is becoming more and more shallow and superficial. Everything from hair styles, fashion, body shape and size, and so on is constantly under the microscope...and our media (and marketing) has a lot to do with fueling people's attitudes by placing too much focus in that direction. Add the fact that humans can be arrogant and even many times mean spirited...that's where the problem originates.

Very well said...I couldn't agree more.

@indyjoe @SW-User If you look at fashion, not just clothing, but hair and makeup and every facet of presentation of self, through the centuries, you will see, way back when the only medium was newspapers...no, even back when the only news carriers were merchants travelling from country to country, personal appearance and fashion was very important and people would literally torture their bodies to look good, as dictated by men, mostly.

These are but a few of the ways people presented themselves, according to what was expected of them.
True, mostly it was the wealthy and high society, who got into this, but that's because the common people were too poor to dress up

@indyjoe And then there's this

Eating tapeworms for weight loss consideration?

Individuals seeking to lose weight are constantly confronted with a variety of diets, supplements, and weight-loss regimens to choose from. Whether in magazines, on television or on the Internet, the consumer can be bombarded with any number of advertisements that claim to offer them the opportunity to lose weight with their products. However, individuals need to be cautious and well-informed when considering what products to use, as certain weight-loss marketing claims are not only misleading but also potentially detrimental to your health. The use of tapeworms for weight-loss purposes illustrates this risk.

it is the first impression before a person speaks. If they do not appear to take care of themselves, ie personal hygiene, grooming etc... it can often be interpreted negatively on one's character.
Most people process information based on what they see so it’s not as shallow as it might seem.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Because we pick people like we would choose an item in a shop; you don't think more than 20-30 seconds about it, and all you care about is the first appearance and reviews.
Simple aesthetics, it isn't so much about if whether looks matter or not. It is about what *is* pleasing to the eye & beneficial to the body/spirit. ☺
