The percentage of the liquid that is alcohol. Hard liquor like say vodka or whiskey are usually 40% or higher...beer on t(e other hand is typically in the 5 to7% range

Alcohol percentage per volume is higher in hard alcohol like rum, vodka, tequila etc vs beers and wines.
