In modern times, it would be indeed the McMartin Preschool scandal, which is what ChipmunkErnie is referencing. McCarthy is a close second. There really were a goodly number of communists in the State Dep't, for example. He just got carried away, and found a commie pinko under every rock... :P

@billybcgn25 Ir wasn't just McMartin, nor was in limited to the US. The hysteria was even worse in the UK, from what I've read.

@billybcgn25 I think we may hear a bit more about that McMartin preschool incident in the future.

You're correct, Ernie. But it was the catalyst. So many people's lives ruined by overzealous bureaucrats, looking to make themselves heroes, and move up in either the prosecutor's office or get elected to that next plum position.

It was Dorothy Rabinowitz of the Wall Street Journal, who unearthed the way the bureaucrats led those kids along, to get the "facts" they needed to secure the convictions they so eagerly lusted after. Her investigative reporting earned her a Pulitzer prize, btw.

But yeah. Once you find onewitch, you'll find 'em everywhere, everywhere! So Beware! As that old song goes...
