Why do people thank god instead of medical science when they recover from an awful illness/accident?

Do they honestly think jesus cured them?

I'm not religious but I say thank god for that cause its just something people say.

Well I guess there are people who literally thank god for everything because to them they believe its cause god created you and he decides your fate.
