happened almost a month ago … was in a surly mood … going into walmart for my self-imposed monthly ration of soda. outside the entrance, approached and started passing by this man in his late 40's or early 50's. noticing the lit cig in his hand, i commented [c=#800000][i]"give 'em up and live another ten"[/i][/c]. he was in genial mood and took no offense. his wife, on other hand, almost had coronary.
was only after two or three minutes that i considered what had taken place. the couple was actually african-american. and, no doubt, the woman had me pegged as a racist scumbag. when i wholly didn't mean it from that perspective.
later that evening, reflecting on something mom had insinuated a few years ago [i](early 50's for me)[/i] … something to the effect that she couldn't believe anyone does [u]not[/u] look at people's skin-color.

and that's true … when i remember back in time … if i ask myself about the color of someone's skin … was so very difficult to discern.
