Why do people say thank you when they get off public transit busses?

is this just a Canadian thing or do you people in other countries notice that too?

It's happened in every US city I've lived in so far too, so it's at least not confined solely to Canada. As for why we do it, it's because driving the bus is a service job. They are doing and providing something for you. Sure, they're getting paid to drive you from one stop to the next, but it's still customary in many parts of the world to thank people for the service they provide you, even if they are getting paid for it
