Why do people say thank you when they get off public transit busses?

is this just a Canadian thing or do you people in other countries notice that too?

Although public, the drivers are still doing us a favor by taking us to where we need to go so it's only polite to say thank you.

@HelloFriend no it is not a favor they do get paid to drive those busses

@Polarbare99 When you order food from a restaurant, surely you say thank you to the waitress for serving you the food you paid for.
