Are travelers checks still practical and accepted for everyday use when traveling today, or are there better alternatives?

I have used a cash card which you can load up with money in the currency(ies) before you go and then either withdraw cash from ATMs or use as a debit card where accepted. It also avoids unexpected conversion charges from your bank. I'm not sure how far you'd get in Europe with the travellers cheque/check, but I don't travel much these days.
