Are travelers checks still practical and accepted for everyday use when traveling today, or are there better alternatives?

They may be in a few places but are probably rendered obsolescent by credit and debit cards, and ATMs.

You do need some cash when travelling abroad, if only for small purchases like a cup of coffee or a few postcards, or admission to some attraction, but otherwise I think you can use your normal cards in most places. Obtain some host-currency cash before leaving home; use the ATMs or banks once there for more.
