Are travelers checks still practical and accepted for everyday use when traveling today, or are there better alternatives?

Travellers cheques are largely obsolete in the UK, with new ones no longer issued, though existing American Express cheques never expire and can still be redeemed. While they offer high security for carrying funds, they now face very limited acceptance by merchants, high cashing-in fees, and poor exchange rates compared to modern prepaid travel cards, credit cards, or debit cards.
