To any Americans out there who are not MAGA fans. Question on travel to the US.

Anyway, I am a Canadian straight white guy and with all the shit that is going on right now in the US. I know border patrol and customs are feds but is it any safer flying to a blue state if you are not a fan of Trump?

Only asking because I met someone online and it is getting kind of serious. Problem is she lives in Fresno, CA.

Just looking for advise now that your federal government is run by lunatics.

Honestly if things were not that serious I would not even be thinking about it.

The Canadian Travel Bureau is telling Canadians to avoid travel to the USA.

They are also telling Canadians to leave your cellphone at home and buy a burner phone when you get to the USA if you have to travel on business and to leave your laptop at home as well.

The US border patrol have the right to search your phone and your laptop in search of anything that is anti-Trump or anti-American in content.

If you have had any drug-related or booze related incidents with the law, even 20 years ago while on spring break in Fort Lauderdale, do not travel to the USA or else you'll be detained indefinitely.

This is currently the case for a Canadian-born guy who travels to the US from Canada on business regularly, who did a side-trip to Mexico and then got detained by ICE upon entry back into the USA from Mexico. He's been in detention for the past 4 months now in Texas and they have no reason to be holding him, but they are...
@swirlie Actually it is that latest case that made me more nervous.

Never had any brushes with the law with dope or anything else.

I have a backup phone but it might be better just to buy one there.

I supposed I could get a laptop from the local refurb place before going.

Crazy that this is the same advice given to people travelling to China on business or hostile nations.

I have some 'senior' friends from Canada who still winter in Florida. They were telling me that despite them owning their Florida place for 25 years, they no longer feel welcome among the Americans who live on the same street in a predominantly Canadian residential area.

Even Americans hate other Americans and there is no sense of common ground shared among them. If you don't have a Trump sign on your front lawn or a MAGA flag hanging from your front porch, Americans automatically assume you are a Democrat. Therefore, everyone on the street has a Trump sign on their front lawn so that nobody knows the truth about their political bias.

It would actually be easier for your American friend to come up to Canada to visit you, than for you to go down there to visit them.
@swirlie Sadly, this is more likely than most people think. Plus, with such an unhinged demented individual currently occupying the Oval Office, every single day it seems he floats some new hate rhetoric or lawless scheme—I caution abundant caution.
