To any Americans out there who are not MAGA fans. Question on travel to the US.

Anyway, I am a Canadian straight white guy and with all the shit that is going on right now in the US. I know border patrol and customs are feds but is it any safer flying to a blue state if you are not a fan of Trump?

Only asking because I met someone online and it is getting kind of serious. Problem is she lives in Fresno, CA.

Just looking for advise now that your federal government is run by lunatics.

Honestly if things were not that serious I would not even be thinking about it.

Sorry to say, at least for now - some of your worries are justified.

People in the US are not the problem, and in fact Canadians would find themselves welcome in most places - especially communities closer to the northern border.

BUT, the official machinery of immigration & border security has been politicized way beyond what's needed to prevent undocumented entry and illegal trade. Much of what you read & see about it online is exaggerated by the usual trolls & fearmongers, but enough is true that you should expect difficulties and take precautions.

Red state or blue, anticipate that your phone & other devices will be subject to search. The I - 94 form is an absolute requirement. You'll be questioned regarding family, friends, and business - on both sides of the border. Try to cover all bases by enrolling in the NEXUS trusted traveller program. Check with the Canadian embassy or consulate in your destination city for other advice before you leave.

My own feeling is that it's very unlikely you'll be detained, but you will be hassled and inconvenienced by DHS, Customs, and Transportation Safety. So unless you feel this trip is an urgent necessity, it may be best to put it off.

This insanity is temporary, and the people who pretend to run things here are losing support fast. For the time being though, the US is nobody's first choice for a good time ✌

Courage boys.

All things pass. So will this ✌
@GuiltyBiStander Either way it will be a test of a new relationship. Either I go down there or somehow convince a girl from Fresno coming to a city where winter is 6 months is a good idea. 😂
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow True love will find a way…

Your worries are justified like someone said. From what I have heard they might check your social media posts. So make sure to delete everything that goes against the government ☹. Posts mentioning you know who…

But otherwise you’re fine considering your ethnicity. I see tourists all the time and airports are full , packed with tourists from all over the world ( last time I caught a flight was less than a month ago).
@Younameit Guess I have to nuke all my social media.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I think they mainly check Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and maybe Youtube.
@Younameit Kind of ridiculous that we are at this point but I guess we are.

Will it be an issue if the person I am visiting has a bit of a colourful history in the US?
My two states will welcome you :) OR or CA i love um
I have to travel to the US and I’m not happy about it. Advice I’ve been given is to travel with a burner phone that doesn’t have access to social media etc.
I would consider the Blue states to at least have common sense, but maybe it is best she come to Canada instead.
Oy, just fly to California. If you’ve got a legit passport you’ll be fine.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow More likely it wasn’t the joint but rather the taint of their skin…
@KunsanVeteran Nope. Dude was interviewed on the news and whiter than me. Probably why he was allowed to give an interview and why his family knows where he is.

Seems there is a hierarchy even among inmates though.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow …this isn’t government, it’s anarchy.

I thought Demented Donnie just decriminalized marijuana with one of his “executive orders “?

The Canadian Travel Bureau is telling Canadians to avoid travel to the USA.

They are also telling Canadians to leave your cellphone at home and buy a burner phone when you get to the USA if you have to travel on business and to leave your laptop at home as well.

The US border patrol have the right to search your phone and your laptop in search of anything that is anti-Trump or anti-American in content.

If you have had any drug-related or booze related incidents with the law, even 20 years ago while on spring break in Fort Lauderdale, do not travel to the USA or else you'll be detained indefinitely.

This is currently the case for a Canadian-born guy who travels to the US from Canada on business regularly, who did a side-trip to Mexico and then got detained by ICE upon entry back into the USA from Mexico. He's been in detention for the past 4 months now in Texas and they have no reason to be holding him, but they are...
@swirlie Actually it is that latest case that made me more nervous.

Never had any brushes with the law with dope or anything else.

I have a backup phone but it might be better just to buy one there.

I supposed I could get a laptop from the local refurb place before going.

Crazy that this is the same advice given to people travelling to China on business or hostile nations.

I have some 'senior' friends from Canada who still winter in Florida. They were telling me that despite them owning their Florida place for 25 years, they no longer feel welcome among the Americans who live on the same street in a predominantly Canadian residential area.

Even Americans hate other Americans and there is no sense of common ground shared among them. If you don't have a Trump sign on your front lawn or a MAGA flag hanging from your front porch, Americans automatically assume you are a Democrat. Therefore, everyone on the street has a Trump sign on their front lawn so that nobody knows the truth about their political bias.

It would actually be easier for your American friend to come up to Canada to visit you, than for you to go down there to visit them.
@swirlie Sadly, this is more likely than most people think. Plus, with such an unhinged demented individual currently occupying the Oval Office, every single day it seems he floats some new hate rhetoric or lawless scheme—I caution abundant caution.

Just get a really good tan, change your name to Pedro Gonzales, and learn some key Spanish phrases. They won't even look twice.

Being a white male, you've already passed their test.
