Just now found out I can arrive at the airport by train

Because check-in time is 6am I was worried about how I could accomplish such a feat.
Taxi at 5am is fraught with them not turning up. Taxi fare would be at least $60. Long term parking would cost at least $120.
Checked the train timetable, catching the first bus at 5am will see me arrive at terminal 3 by 6am.
A worry lifted.

I made a dummy run to the airport using public transport today.
Easy enough. When I arrived, I stood around in the departures lounge looking lost and a service person came up to me asking if I needed help.
I explained I have not flown for 38 years and all this is a little daunting. I also explained this is a dummy run, my flight is not for a month yet and I do not have a smart phone.

I presented her with the paper Qantas sent me, "Confirmation of E-Ticket" and asked "Is this enough to get me on the plane"?
"No, that is not enough, you will need a boarding pass."
"How do I go about that"?
"When you arrive at 6am search out a service person and they will help you make the required arrangements"

"I will be catching public transport at 5am and the schedule says I will arrive here by 6am. What if I am 10-15 minutes late"?

"You will be fine. We will ensure you get on the flight"

So, I got the answers I was musing over which makes the task of catching an early morning flight to Melbourne less stressful.

I wished that the train system was as efficient here.

I was amazed at 14 when I went to Germany. The train was just underneath the airport. Mind you this was 1973.

@ninalanyon Well there is no like in all of Southern California. That's LAX, John Wayne international, Ontario international, and San Diego international. All of which I have flown from.

@DeWayfarer Never been that far west. Furthest west I've been was Jefferson City, Missouri. Drove from the airport at St. Louis. Never been on a train in the US. I did look into the idea once because I used to visit Raleigh, North Carolina, quite often and fancied a change from the internal flight from Newark. But it was pretty much impossible. Getting from New York to Washington was not too bad but then there was a half a day wait for the train to Raleigh.

@ninalanyon You name the method of transportation, excepting fighter aircraft, and I have likely been on it or drove it. 🤣

Plus I have been through 40 of the main states multiple times. 🙃

Yeah including animals of various types.

Likely my first animal...
