How 2 Americans thought they were flying to France — and ended up in North Africa.....To Nice, not Tunis!

Two young American women who boarded a plane in Rome, Italy, say they thought it was going to Nice, France, only to discover the flight was destined for Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, a country in North Africa. They documented their apparent mishap in a series of videos on TikTok, which racked up tens of millions of views.

This is how they say it happened: Brittney Dzialo and her friend missed their original flight from Rome to Nice, so they asked the airline if they could be booked on another flight "to Nice." The pair were told to go to Tunisair, the national airline of Tunisia. They then bought tickets to Tunis, not Nice, apparently unaware that airline workers were misunderstanding that they wanted to fly to the French coastal city.

The women say they only realized their error after they had boarded the plane and were informed by a fellow passenger that the flight was headed for Tunis.

“Is this going to Nice?” one of the women asked the passenger.

“Tunis, yeah,” the passenger replied. “I thought you said ‘to Nice,’ which is in France. That’s why you confused me.”

Nice is pronounced “neese”; Tunis is pronounced “too neese.”

“Wait, wait, where is this going?” one of the women asked as she Googled Tunis on her phone.

“Tunisia,” the passenger replied.

The women told a flight attendant that they were on the wrong flight, but were told it was too late to deboard the plane and would have to sort it out after landing in Tunis.

After spending several hours at the airport in Tunis and having multiple conversations with airline personnel, they were finally able to get on a flight to their intended destination.

Dzialo posted an image of her friend posing in front of a fountain with the caption: “NICE COMMA FRANCE.”

While Dzialo’s videos of their ordeal went viral, some TikTok commenters were skeptical that they had truly made a mistake.

“This is hard to believe,” one commenter wrote. “How would you not notice the destination on the ticket???”

“Did you not see the big screen that said ‘Tunis’ at the gate?” wrote another. “Did either of you look at your boarding passes? Strange.”

“There’s so many points of confirmation between the booking and boarding process,” another added, “that makes this both impossible and unbelievable.”

We know Americas struggle with geography.

You’d think with the tickets, the departure information screens and a multitude of other things, the penny would have dropped prior to boarding. Oh well 😆
