Is having to arrive 3 hours before departure efficient

Just heard that to catch an international flight from Australia one must arrive at least 3 hours before flight departure.
Domestic flight? 2 hours before departure.
All one has to do is use the self serve electronic check in terminals to confirm plus check in baggage.
That should be a smooth process, yes?

That sounds nice for you... just imagine having to be the guy who has to decide how much fuel you need to get there safely and needing your final weight to do that.

Then you need to do it before passengers can board.

Then you'll need to read all about the aircraft you'll be flying today and get the weather reports because that's a factor in how much fuel you'll need.

Some of that information will need to be told to the aircraft too...

You'll need to ensure that the right amount of food that you will consume during the flight is delivered so nobody goes hungry and you're not ferrying food all over the world for fun.

You live in a post 9/11 world, so you can't fly with luggage that is unaccounted for - if there's any discrepancy bags have to be off loaded until that's sorted out.

Oh... and now you don't know how much weight you will have on your plane because someone doesn't want to wait 2 or 3 hours in the terminal.

Apparently, most people value getting there safely more than they like the idea of being the next Air India.

As Maskedman said, This is why I wont fly any more.

I recently went to Airlie Beach & Cains to visit friends.

I cruised, mini suite with priority boarding. Arrived at terminal 10.30am.

In my cabin 11.00am, eating lunch in dinner room 12 Noon.

This is why I wont fly any more. The flight isnt fun (it never was) But from leaving home to the plane, and getting off the plane to getting to the place I am going is a nightmare. I would rather drive or take a train, not being in a rush now..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman Getting to the airport might take 1/2 an hour to 1 hour.
Getting from airport to destination at least the same time frame.
Ridiculous amount of time.

@Gusman In my case, it takes an hour at 4 in the morning. Double that at peak times.😷

Try flying out of Tel Aviv or to Tel Aviv. Four hours pre-flight, and you need most of it for the security "checkin". The entire security team that processes a flight, must join the flight.
They say this is for a more relaxed experience.

Its not.

Who wants to sit for hours in a busy airport or stuffy lounge?

And what if the flight is delayed?

Ugh.

@OogieBoogie Passengers are held to ransom and there is not a thing they can do about it.
When a plane lands it has a maximum of a 2 hour turn around time, very rarely does this fail.
So much needs to be done to turn a large plane around, most of the time it runs smoothly.
Passengers need only to check-in themselves and their baggage.
Should not require 3 hours for that.
When traveling domestically, I have an 8 hour rule... if I can drive somewhere in 8 hours straight, it's more cost effective and more time-efficient to drive my car, rather than fly or even take the train.

@swirlie Same here.. And Melb sydney or Melb adelaide are both about 8 hours drive.
