A 28 year old Welsh woman was detained for 19 days and deported in chains after she accidentally overstayed her work visa. That is the context of the UK travel advisory warning.
@SunshineGirl There’s still a lot of untold details. Snopes (not a friend of the government) can’t confirm some of the father’s story. What we know is that immigration wouldn’t let her back in after the Canadians wouldn’t let her cross either.
See what Snopes says. https://www.snopes.com/news/2025/03/10/becky-burke-detained-by-ice/
@SunshineGirl and possibly because it’s a recent, ongoing investigation. They don’t share facts during an investigation. If they denied her any access to talking with anybody, I CE will be in a lot of trouble and will find out.
"England" would not issue any such warning - it would be under the name of the United Kingdom, and none has been issued to the best of my knowledge. It would have been widely publicised if it was.
@Sazzio Could well be, but there have been two unofficial warnings from Britons who have had unfortunate encounters with the US authorities.
One was simply bizarre: the bureaucrats identified one Englishman as a potential South-American criminal gang-member simply by a Facebook post of his rather pretentious tattoo! Allegedly it resembles one once used by gang-members as a recognition symbol. It made him and his wife wonder if they ought cancel a planned holiday in the States.
The other was a Welsh woman who had evidently not read or understood properly her visa's very rigid "no work" rules. She had helped with housework unpaid but in return for overnight stays in private homes - but that does not excuse the uncivilised way she said the US officials detained and deported her.
Chemical warfare is when you send troops to LA and use tear gas. Peaceful countries used to export most of the war, you don't expect that from the US, anymore! It's war and they're never turning back?!!
