Should overweight passengers have to pay more for plane tickets?

@MalcolmY Well everyone is built differently.

I have a close friend who struggles with his weight and is very self-conscious about it. His self esteem suffers because of his appearance. This, to me, is unfair because he has been ridiculed because of his weight. And he is a tremendous person.

@Coldplay I bet he is glad that he has people like you in his life.

@Coldplay Sure. But aside from some fairly rare genetic or health conditions. The cause of obesity is self inflicted. It doesn't diminish someone's worth to be big, but it does sometimes provide logistical problems for others.

@AthrillatheHunt Talk what you know about. I'm overweight. Yet haven't eaten any fast food a total of 4 times this entire year. And that includes while taking a vacation. In fact, I generally eat just one home cooked meal per day. People that are overweight have enough stereotypes to deal with and are maligned enough as it is by our society. Attitudes very much like the one you have demonstrated. You are certainly old enough to know better Mr Perfect!

@RSquared The cause of obesity is more calories in than expended. I eat 8000 calories a day, but I also lift heavy. So to say, if you're overweight, you're eating more than you're burning.

@MalcolmY That's presumptive. Not looking for an argument. I just can't look at someone overweight and just think...well, that's self-inflicted. I prefer to have empathy for how they might feel.

@Coldplay You can have both those things. It is more often than not self inflicted, there are consequences in life for being obese, but you can still have compassion.

@MalcolmY Self-inflicted can be connected to many things...emotional issues, stress, metabolism, glandular issues, etc. We can't lump them all in one category. It's more complicated than what many may think. I stand with the compassionate understanding and support side of the discussion.

@MalcolmY @Coldplay hit the nail on the head. While the premise you put forward is true regarding calories intake vs calories burned, it was quite presumptive of you. That's true when it's controllable. Not when the pancreas doesn't produce insulin and the body can't process it. There are more reasons to obesity than simply choosing to outeat the expenditure.

@Coldplay The reasoning for all intents and purposes does not matter, the action taken, overeating, makes a person obese. And when on an airplane or in a confined space you are making your problem someone elses as that person is not intruding on another person's space.

Compassion isn't the issue here, have compassion, you should, but physics and biology are dispassionately and real.

@RSquared Maybe we are saying the same thing? I'm saying it's not controllable in many cases. And it's not for me to judge.

@MalcolmY Ok, so then let's parade them publicly and shame them for making the choice to be overweight. After all, they are intruding on my space.

@Coldplay and I'm saying it mainly is, but it doesn't matter, if you're causing problems for others it's a logistical problem, if you need two airline seats you need to be charged for two.

@Coldplay I was saying you were correct. You hit the nail on the head. As for @MalcolmY's confined space argument, I will revert to my original comment. My wife is 5'2" and weighs 100#. I purchase two airline tickets side by side. We infringe on no one. Making generalistic statements about anything is often hurtful and wrong.
