Such a shame we don't take better care of our canal system.
For 200 years they were major feats of engineering excellence, built by thousands and admired around the world as a way of transporting goods and people around the country.
Some of the lock systems alone are amazing.
How you can go from way below sea level in one place and through a series of locks elevate your barge and all it contains to way above it.

The TV series of canal journeys by Prunella Scales and Timothy West was excellent.

An engineering feat for it`s time probably.

Shame it's overgrown and not in use by the long boats
