I spent the first half of my adult life as a military and airline pilot and half of that hanging around airports. Most airports had "staff" type facilities, some even had employee cafeterias. Crossing paths with old friends and doing catch-ups made it all pass pleasantly; also it was easy to find common ground with other crewmembers, even if crewed with them for the first time. It was also an opportunity to make new friends for the moment. Even just dead heading, it was rare to not have an interesting person to chit-chat with.

One of the most interesting seat-mates was a gent who just that morning had been released after 14 years incarceration at the federal pen and was flying home to mama. His wide eyed enthusiasm for freedom was so refreshing. Like his "Oh my GOD!!" surprise when he discovered the flight served alcoholic drinks. In the hours waiting for the next flight I learned all about his crime, his trial, his time in jail.

I think the industry phrase was "hurry up and wait" often used to reference the hours, sometimes many hours, even days between events. Thankfully there were hotel rooms (usually) when the wait time was extensive. Since "hurry up and wait" was a pretty common thing we all expected it and were prepared.
